Die DHL Group unterhält weltweit insgesamt vier Innovation Center – in Deutschland, Singapur, den USA und den Vereinigten Arabischen Emiraten. Für Deutschland ist jetzt ein hochmodernes, CO₂-neutral betriebenes Innovation Center geplant, das sich in Troisdorf und damit ganz in der Nähe der Unternehmenszentrale in Bonn befindet. Als klares Bekenntnis zu Nachhaltigkeit lässt DHL an der Kaiserstraße 2 erstmals ein Gebäude in Holzbauweise errichten. Dem Konzern ist es ein Anliegen, seine Kunden und Partner bei ihren logistischen Herausforderungen mit zukunftsweisenden Lösungen zu unterstützen. Der Baubeginn soll bereits in einigen Wochen erfolgen. Der bisherige Standort des DHL Innovation Centers am Junkersring 55 wird an den Vermieter zurückgegeben, sobald die neuen Räumlichkeiten im Jahr 2025 bezogen werden können.

Ganzheitlicher Ansatz für ein neues, nachhaltiges Innovation Center 

Sowohl die Realisierung als auch der Betrieb des Gebäudes folgen nachhaltigen Prinzipien. Schon beim Bau setzt der Konzern auf den Einsatz umweltfreundlicher Materialien aus regionaler Produktion. Das neue DHL Europe Innovation Center soll komplett aus Brettsperrholz bestehen – ein Novum bei der DHL Group. Zum Einsatz kommen zudem zirkuläre Designelemente und erneuerbare Rohstoffe, mit denen das Wohlbefinden von Beschäftigten und Besuchern verbessert werden soll. Und durch die Verwendung umweltfreundlicher Technologien, unter anderem einer PV-Dachanlage, wird das Gebäude klimaneutral sein.

Auch im Inneren ist viel Neues geplant. In einem großen Showroom werden Trends und Technologien, einzigartige Exponate und immersive Erlebnisse präsentiert. Ein modulares und kundenorientiertes Konzept ermöglicht es, die Räumlichkeiten an unterschiedliche Nutzungszwecke anzupassen. In Kombination mit diversen Konferenz- und Workshopräumen eignet sich das Innovation Center für große Branchenveranstaltungen. Mit einer Gesamtfläche von rund 5.000 Quadratmetern bietet es Platz für Events mit bis zu 400 Personen. 

Partnerschaften innerhalb der Region

Die Entscheidung für den Neubau in Troisdorf in rund fünf Kilometer Entfernung vom bisherigen Standort hatte strategische Gründe – darunter vor allem die Nähe zum Firmenhauptsitz und das Bekenntnis zur Region, die von der Investition klar profitiert. Das Innovation Center wird gemeinsam mit der Stadt Troisdorf und regionalen Anbietern geplant.

Innovationsansatz und -plattform von DHL

Mit seinen vier Innovation Centern in Deutschland, Singapur, den USA und den Vereinigten Arabischen Emiraten verfolgt DHL einen fokussierten, nutzerorientierten und systematischen Ansatz, um Trends, Best-Practice-Ansätze und potenzielle Branchenanwendungen sowie deren Bedeutung für die Logistik frühzeitig zu erkennen. Neben Workshops, Besucherführungen und Kundenveranstaltungen finden im Innovation Center Projekte mit Partnern statt, die darauf abzielen, die Anforderungen der Kunden besser zu verstehen und Lieferkettenprobleme zu lösen. Zum Beispiel verbessert der Konzern seine Prozesse kontinuierlich, um den Mitarbeitenden eine sichere Arbeitsumgebung bieten zu können. Ein kürzlich durchgeführter Proof of Concept in Zusammenarbeit mit DHL Global Forwarding in Dänemark erforscht die Integration von KI und Computer Vision in Betriebsabläufe zur Verbesserung der Sicherheit. Die Partnerschaft mit Protex AI, die auf KI-gesteuerter Technologie basiert, erleichtert proaktive Sicherheitsentscheidungen durch handlungsorientierte Erkenntnisse.

Die DHL Innovation Center zählen jedes Jahr weltweit mehr als 15.000 Besucher, arbeiten mit über 100 Start-ups zusammen, betreuen mehr als 150 Innovationsprojekte und rund 1.000 Experten sind hierbei involviert. Damit bringt der Konzern sein Bekenntnis zu wegweisenden Entwicklungen für die Zukunft der Logistik zum Ausdruck.

Four DHL Innovation Centers worldwide serve as the cornerstone of the company’s innovation program of the DHL Group. In Germany, strategically located near the company’s headquarters in Bonn, DHL will start the construction of a new, cutting-edge, carbon-neutral European Innovation Center in Troisdorf in a few weeks. This establishment represents the company's inaugural venture into wood construction, reaffirming its commitment to sustainability. The new DHL Europe Innovation Center will serve as a hub for trend research and technology development, providing innovative solutions to assist customers and partners in navigating their logistics journey. The anticipated completion date for the facility is set for April 2025.

Holistic approach for the new, sustainable Innovation Center 

Sustainability has been a guiding principle for DHL throughout the realization of the new DHL Europe Innovation Center. DHL focuses on using environmentally friendly materials from regional production during construction. Constructed from locally sourced cross-laminated timber, the groundbreaking facility marks the first timber-built facility in the DHL Group's portfolio, yielding multiple benefits. This includes promoting a circular design and enhancing the well-being of employees and visitors, all while ensuring durability and superior aesthetics. The climate neutrality of the building is provided using green technologies, including a photovoltaic roof system.

The Innovation Center will feature a new showroom design, presenting future trends and technologies, unique exhibits, and immersive experiences. The new building will also have a modular and customer-orientated concept that allows flexible adaptations for different uses and purposes without oversizing the facility. With its optimized layout and structure, including conference and workshop facilities, the facility can be used for significant industry events and conferences. Covering roughly 5,000 square meters, the space is provided for events with up to 400 participants. 

Partnerships within the region

Just five kilometers from the existing Europe Innovation Center, DHL has opted to remain in Troisdorf to construct the new facility, driven by strategic considerations. This decision reflects the success of the current Innovation Center's location in the area and the strategic location of the company’s headquarters. It underscores DHL's commitment to ongoing investment in North Rhine-Westphalia. The local community will benefit from the newly planned Innovation Center, developed in collaboration with the city of Troisdorf and regional providers.

The former Innovation Center building is under DHL's lease and will be relinquished to the landlord upon DHL's departure.
